How the SMA inverter range is organised

SMA names by phase count first and by scale second. Sunny Boy is the single-phase line, Sunny Tripower the three-phase line, and Sunny Central the utility-scale central inverter platform. Eleven SMA entries are listed here.

Single-phase: Sunny Boy

Sunny Boy 30 36 40 50 60 is stored as one entry covering a family of ratings rather than as separate models, and only its 17.5 kg weight is recorded. Sunny Boy Smart Energy is the single-phase hybrid: listed as a hybrid type, one phase, three MPPT channels, a 500 V maximum DC input and 230 V output.

Three-phase: Sunny Tripower

Most of the range sits here, spanning residential through commercial. Sunny Tripower 30 40 50 60 at 17 kg and Sunny Tripower 80 100 at 20.5 kg are again family entries. Sunny Tripower Smart Energy is the three-phase hybrid counterpart to the Sunny Boy Smart Energy.

Above them the commercial platforms carry real ratings: Sunny Tripower CORE1 at 50,000 W with six MPPT channels, Sunny Tripower X 60 at 60,000 W with five MPPT channels, 40 A per input and 50.5 kg, and Sunny Tripower 125 at 125,000 W with twelve MPPT channels. Sunny Tripower X is the platform entry for that family, with three MPPT channels recorded.

Large commercial and utility

Sunny Highpower PEAK3 is listed at 180,000 W on a 1,500 V DC system. Sunny Central UP is a different class of machine altogether: a central inverter rated 4,600,000 W with six MPPT channels and a 1,500 V DC ceiling, sized for utility plants rather than rooftops.

What this listing does not cover. SMA's stored data is thin. No efficiency figure is recorded for any SMA entry, several hold only two or three specs, and several are family designations covering multiple ratings on a single page. Treat these eleven entries as a map of how the range is structured, not as SMA's full model list.

Reading an SMA model designation

An SMA designation is a family name plus, usually, a power figure.

The family name carries the phase count. Sunny Boy is single-phase, and the Sunny Boy Smart Energy entry records one phase. Sunny Tripower is three-phase; "Tri" is the tell, and every Tripower entry with a phase count recorded lists three.

The number is nominal AC power in kilowatts. Sunny Tripower 125 is stored at 125,000 W and Sunny Tripower X 60 at 60,000 W. Where a designation runs several numbers together, as in Sunny Boy 30 36 40 50 60 or Sunny Tripower 80 100, those are the several ratings of one family sharing a chassis, which SMA writes with a decimal point. They are not a single rating, and no nominal power is stored for those entries.

Smart Energy means hybrid. Both Smart Energy entries are recorded as hybrid types: the inverter handles battery charge and discharge alongside PV, where a plain Sunny Boy or Sunny Tripower does not.

CORE1, X and PEAK3 are platform names, not ratings. They identify a hardware generation or mounting concept, and the power figure follows where SMA appends one: Sunny Tripower X 60 is the 60 kW member of the X platform.

Sunny Central marks a different architecture — a central inverter rather than a string inverter, which is why Sunny Central UP is stored at 4,600,000 W.
