Single-phase is the norm for smaller domestic systems; three-phase is standard for larger installations, for most commercial connections, and for many European homes that already have a three-phase supply. Two practical points follow. First, a large single-phase inverter unbalances the network and many distribution operators cap single-phase generation at a defined limit. Second, in a house with three-phase supply and single-phase generation, whether self-consumption is netted across all three phases depends on the meter and on local rules — get that confirmed before sizing, because it changes the economics.
