# Nominal AC Power

The continuous alternating-current power an inverter can deliver to the grid or to a load under normal conditions, expressed in watts. It is the figure used to size an inverter against a PV array and the number that appears in the model designation of most units.

Nominal AC power is the working headline figure: a 5000 W inverter can sustain 5000 W indefinitely within its rated temperature range. It is not the same as the DC power the array can produce, which is normally larger — see **DC/AC ratio**. Grid connection paperwork and export limits are almost always written against the nominal AC power, not against the panel capacity, so this is the number the distribution network operator cares about.
