# IP Protection Rating

A two-digit code describing how well the enclosure resists solid objects and water: the first digit covers dust and contact, the second covers moisture. IP65, for example, means dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction.

For an inverter mounted outdoors, IP65 is the usual minimum and IP66 offers more margin against driven rain and hose-down cleaning. Indoor-only units may be IP20 or IP21 and must not be exposed. The rating describes the sealed enclosure as manufactured, so it survives only if cable glands are fitted correctly and unused entries are plugged — a badly terminated gland turns an IP65 box into an open one. Note that a high IP rating does not imply UV resistance or thermal tolerance: direct afternoon sun still causes **derating**, so shade the unit even when it is rated for outdoor use.
