The architectural class of the unit: string inverter, microinverter, hybrid or off-grid. The type determines where it sits in the system, what it can be connected to, and whether it can work without a grid present.

A string inverter converts a whole series-connected group of modules at one point and is the default for most roofs. A microinverter sits under each module and converts locally. A hybrid inverter adds a battery port and energy management to a grid-tied design. An off-grid inverter forms its own AC network and cannot export. The distinction is not cosmetic: a plain grid-tied string inverter shuts down in a power cut by design, so if backup is the goal, the type has to be chosen accordingly rather than bolted on later.
