Array

The complete assembly of photovoltaic modules in an installation, made up of one or more strings together with their mounting structure and DC wiring. It is the generating side of the system, as distinct from the inverter and the AC side.

Array capacity is quoted in watt-peak (Wp or kWp), the sum of the modules' rated output at standard test conditions, which is why the array figure is always larger than the AC power actually seen — see DC/AC ratio. An array may be split across several roof planes and connected to different MPPT channels so that each orientation is tracked separately. Everything inside the array boundary stays live in daylight regardless of what the inverter is doing, which is the reason rapid shutdown requirements exist in the first place.
